The auxiliary phrase is played in the questionnaire a major role, often the same as the subsidiary questions. The first advantage is that by using them we remove the monotony arising from these issues. No matter how diverse the questions, but just answer them bored.
Auxiliary sentences perform different functions in the questionnaire. They serve to shift the attention of Respondent to a new set of questions: "And now we move on to other issues. Let's talk a little about Your interests in the field of cinema". Without the subsidiary, introductory phrases the transition can be sharp and funny. Sometimes these introductory sentences are called binders.
Auxiliary clauses are used and how divisive, to neutralize the influence of one cluster to another, or one issue to another. As already mentioned, this frequently used auxiliary questions, but sometimes it is better to use a declarative sentence:
"We finished the block of questions about Your interests in the field of cinema. Now, let's talk about other issues. Perhaps it so happens that You cannot go to rest with your family: it does not leave, then no money, then suddenly there are still some difficulties when summer comes. And every time you have to solve these problems in different ways.
PLEASE TELL ME YOU OFTEN VACATION TOGETHER WITH YOUR FAMILY?"
This proposal is built is quite long and lengthy. It is made specifically to the Respondent had sufficient information and time to engage in a new topic.
Auxiliary clauses are used for removing conventional constraints, the effects of accepted norms or considerations of prestige on the Respondent's response. Answering a question, especially of a personal nature, the Respondent may, focusing on public opinion, not respond the way he really thinks and how actually will do in a given case, and as is customary or because of the desire to put yourself in the best light.
Elisabeth Noelle gives an example of the analysis of the survey on the means of shampooing:
"Please answer a few more questions about Your habits related to washing hair. Many people say that the hair and scalp is harmful too frequent washing. Could You please tell me when the last time You washed your hair?"
Comment: the example in the question to eliminate the influence of conventional rules, how to counteract the answers, which could affect considerations of prestige".
The removal of the conventional standards is a very important moment in the development of the questionnaire and formulation of questions, but, unfortunately, it is rarely used in sociological practice. Most often (far more often than we think) due to prestigious reasons, the respondents answered not the way I think or do really. Therefore, considering human judgments, it is necessary to carefully prepare the wording of each question, where there is a danger of such influence, and possibly remove it.
